A Dying Duke

Ireland-03-b-003.jpg (128864 bytes)

Still bearing her proud name, the Duke of Lancaster sits quietly rusting away at her landlocked berth at Llanerch-y-Mor, near the port of Mostyn on the North Wales coast. My last visit to the ship was on 12 September 2003 when the photo left was taken. Encased in concrete she won't be going anywhere  again and indeed she has been in this location for longer than her entire seagoing career. After sale by Sealink in 1979 the new owners of this handsome steamer had grand plans for their new ship, including a 300-bed hotel with casino, and other leisure facilities. Sadly she failed to pass planning and safety regulations and as far as I can ascertain she served as little more than a unique venue for a market, her car deck being used for trader's stalls. © Justin Merrigan

The photos below were kindly taken for Sealink-Holyhead.com by Mick Clarke of Blackburn over Easter 2006. They tell the whole sorry story of her imprisonment. There remains only one final outcome for the once noble Duke, breaking-up where she lies. © Mick Clarke
