Looking at the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) era, through the state-owned British Transport Commission (BTC) and  'British Railways' (BR) which came into being on 1 January 1948. Continuing through the establishment of the new British Railways Board on 1 January 1963 and the abolition of the BTC, to the formation on 1 January 1968 of the Shipping and International Services Division and until that ceased on 1st January 1979, the day on which Sealink UK Ltd, a wholly owned company of the British Rail Board, was born.
